Tired of cheesy Valentine costumes and skimpy lingerie? You can make a God or Goddess of Love costume. The supplies will cost less than $10 and construction only takes a couple of hours. Pick your favorite iconic love persona and let’s make a costume.

I’ve decided to try my hand at a Venus/Aphrodite ensemble. I looked around the internet for help in recreating semi-authentic Roman and Greek dress. Here’s a nice description of women’s wear and here’s one for the men too. Basically we need to start with a large rectangle of cloth. Raid your linen closet for an old flat sheet or pick up a bargain brand at your local department store for around $10.

I started with a white full size flat sheet. I trimmed the sheet a bit to get rid of some of the bulk. Next, fold the sheet in half. The sheet should be half as tall now. Then fold the sheet lengthwise to create a rectangle of fabric, double-ply, approximately body sized. Adjust the fold until the height is about the same as the distance between your shoulders and your feet.

Mark and pin the edges for sewing. I’m sewing from the top (shoulder) straight down the side to mid-thigh. This should leave a nice slit for showing off some leg. A straight stitch will do here. Iron out any wrinkles or folds in the sheet. Flip inside out to hide the seam and you have a big tube top. The Roman clothing page states women often pinned broaches to secure the front to the back. I don’t have broaches so I’ve used hidden safety pins. Worked like a charm.

The arm holes were a little tight. I cut a slit about four inches long under the arm. You can adjust that if needed. I finished the Goddess dress by wrapping silver trim under my bust, crossing across the stomach, and then a wrap around the waist. Use any trim or ribbon you have on hand (even wrapping ribbon will work).

I tied it all together with some coordinating ribbon in the hair arranged like a tiara. Feel free to use a tiara or jewelry. I bet a necklace over your hair would look very nice. I used shimmer gold toned eye makeup to stay in he metallic family. Have a little fun with the eyes since it’s a special occasion. Try a frost color or even some soft pastels.

There you have it. You can make your goddess dress and get ready in about two hours. Good luck with your sheets and have a lovely Valentine’s Day.

Due to my poor observance of local park times, I don’t have any full shots of the outfit for you today. I do have my golden apple with which to make deals with the mortals. I will post them as soon as the parks open and the rain moves away.
