Mardi Gras Mask Contest Winners
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 by tcgCongratulations everyone on a fun and fantastic Mardi Gras season. I’ve been playing with mask ideas and techniques for next year. I’ve even learned a little something from the entrants. I’m pleased to announce the two winners of the First Annual That Costume Girl Mardi Gras Mask Contest: adult and youth. I think you all will agree they deserve the recognition.
First we have Micaela, a third grader, with her butterfly mask. Her mom helped her print off one of the templates. Next she had a lot of fun coloring and decorating her mask. Her mask features some lovely dazzle elements. I particularly like her coloring her mask post to match her mask. Well done, Micaela, and congratulations!

In the adult category, I’ve chosen Pip. Her mask is simple, classy, and pretty. It doesn’t get much better than this. Her details are small and eye catching. The best part of her mask, in my opinion, is the technique. She’s used the classic salt dough method to build a Venetian style mask. I’ve used salt dough for arts and crafts projects and tree ornaments, but never for a mask. It’s the perfect medium for adults or children. I gave her some bonus points for using a method anyone can do. I’m also partial to the sage green color.

The prize packages include a 2009 Cloisonné Endymion medallion, Mardi Gras beads, and a mask kit. Thank you everyone for participating in the First Annual That Costume Girl Mardi Gras Mask Contest.
I had a wonderful time looking through your submissions. I made a few masks that I hope to share with you over the next few weeks. My parents are stopping by today on their way home from New Orleans and their Mardi Gras experience. With any luck, I’ll get a picture or two of my dad’s Endymion parade costume for you. I hope the contest has introduced you to a new opportunity to create costumes and masks. Happy Mardi Gras! Laissez les bon temps roulez!
