DC Costume Adjustments
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 by tcgEvery now and then, the comic book industry reworks characters. Sometimes it’s a complete rewrite of the back story (Poor Spider-Man fans). This time it’s a adjusting costumes. DC Comics is debuting new looks for Batwoman and The Question on their blog.
Batwoman was featured in one of the storylines in 52. She worked with the Questions and Renee Montoya to stop Intergang from unleashing the horrors of the Crime Bible. Batwoman had to be extra careful because they wanted to sacrifice her alter ego Kathy Kane, the socialite.
She was well dressed and given to the Batman syndrome of broken hearts and failed relationships, her latest with Montoya. Batwoman had high heeled boots and a loose belt (see right). Her cape had a scalloped edge. She wore a half mask. Her new look include a personality overhaul as well. Fancy dresses will be the exception instead of the rule in her new Rockabilly Chic persona. I like it. It’s a little edgy and a lot of fun. Her Batwoman costume received a few upgrades. Most notably are her flat heeled boots (thank goodness!).

During 52 the Question passed away. He knew he was ill and began to train Gotham ex-detective Renee Montoya to take his place. For decades he was the cool detective and conspiracy nut in the long trench coat and fedora. Watchmen’s Rorschach is based on Question. When he died, Montoya didn’t know quite what to do. She began to mimic him in most ways, including his dress. With the restyle she adapts the suit to her personality.

Now if only they’d update Powergirl’s costume. Yes, there’s a reason for the obnoxious boob window: she didn’t want to use Kal El’s symbol. That time has passed and it’s time she became her own vision. DC Comics, talk to Joel Carroll. His design is perfect.
