Part II: That Costume Girl Visits the Renaissance Faire
Friday, May 29th, 2009 by tcgYesterday we made our way to the castle at the Renaissance Faire. Today, we’ll leave the relative safety of the castle walls. It took a few minutes for our eyes to adjust to the bright outdoors after being inside the dank castle for so long. Even with the sound of the musicians paying, it was an effort to find where the music originated.
A large group of faire citizens were dancing for the crowds. The dancers began pulling in onlookers to dance the next round with the group. Men, women, and children were pulled into the circle. One kilted gentleman stood in the middle and shouted directions to everyone involved. It was steamy and loud and a few people were stumbling through the instructions. Eventually they worked together to produce a festive dance.
Towards the end of the dance, my tummy started rumbling. My parents and I decided to check out the food stands for treats. The traditional turkey legs were nearby as well as basics like grilled chicken, fried things, and vegetables. We picked the falafel stand. A good ol’ simple falafel wrap with perfect tahini sauce. Mmmm, yummy. We also added some curled potatoes to our tray from a neighboring stand (Fried potatoes are always a good thing). It was nice to rest on the benches in the shade while we ate.
Shortly after finishing our meal, a gentleman offered his greetings to us. The cost of a picture of his very nice costume was a picture with him. I agreed. It was then I found out he is a naughty, bawdy man. He kept on about my legs. Though it’s hard to get offended, after all, they have their roles to play. Some women are friendly flower girls and others are trollops. Some men are jesters and others, well, you get the picture.
It was all in fun. Stay tuned for the final events of the adventure… pirates, sword fights, and trapeze artists are still to come.
