Part III: That Costume Girl Visits the Renaissance Faire
Saturday, May 30th, 2009 by tcgAfter we were well fed and sated we continued wandering around the Renaissance Faire. The lanes led us down to stages and a midway of renaissance themed games. The first stage featured a Laundry Lass show. I’m not sure what that means, but I think it had some audience participation. On Memorial Day the Laundry Lasses hosted a Wet Tunic contest for men. I like the way the Laundry Lasses think! There were village scenes with smithies and more taverns. There were a lot of ale distributors…not to worry there were softer drinks for the kids.
The life-size chess board sometimes features a live chess game similar to Alice in Wonderland. Sunday a group of cast members were putting on a few scenes. First there was some fighting amongst the men. Then there was some sword play amongst the women. I have no idea why the ladies were sparring. That led to a pillow fight that had the audience rolling in laughter.
The Faire has a schedule of events that includes jousts, teas, ceilidhs, and masquerades. The atmosphere was more relaxed when we were there. Many of the cast members were strolling through the grounds and talking with guests and fellow cast. No matter what time or day you attend, there will always be something happening. Listen for the music and laughter. We saw a fire juggler on a tightrope (no pictures, sorry), singing pirates, and a gypsy camp straight out of The Wolf Man. Perhaps my favorite act that afternoon was the trapeze. This duo was hilarious and appropriately risky on the swing. The young lady had a sharp tongue that kept the audience both on the edge of their seats and full of laughter.
We had a wonderful afternoon. There are enough events and activities to keep you busy for days not just the few hours we attended. I encourage everyone to go to a Renaissance Faire at least once. It’s not just about wearing voluminous costumes and drinking beer. There’s fun for the entire family and you might learn a thing or two. Think of it like an interactive circus.
Next week I’ll help you think of costumes for you and your family to wear to the faire. You’ll get a better look at what I wore and how easy it was to make.

I’d like to see a game of chess played on that life-sized board. I bet it’d be hilarious!

I bet it would be fun to see. I wonder if the knights get little stick horses to ride?

Stick horses for the knights? Ha, that’d be great!
How about cardboard castle costumes for the rooks?
