Comic Con’s Costumes

I didn’t make it out to Comic Con. Luckily, many of the authors of my favorite sites did go to Comic Con. Head over to Great White Snark for a rundown of the weekend. His galleries are a must see: Day 1 Part 1 and Part 2; Day 2 Part 1 and Part 2; and Days 3 and 4.

Great White Snark hunted down the best costumes. Apparently there was a glut of Poison Ivy costumes at SDCC this year. The Bat had a big year so it makes sense that his rogues gallery would be out in full force.

Don’t forget to read all the convention news at Topless Robot, Comic Book Resources, and Io9. Also check out I Heart Chaos for more pictures.

See Io9’s masquerade contest documentary.

Yes, More Mythbusters

I guess you’ve figured out by now that I am a Mythbusters fan. I have stood in line to meet the build team and get their autographs. Grant’s autograph is one of my prized possessions. He was a little taken aback by my celebrity crush (He builds robots. How could I not have a crush on him?). But I digress! What was Adam’s costume?

Wicked Good Time

We saw Wicked last night. ManWithPez and I enjoyed the show tremendously. It was great. The show was fun, the music was catchy, the cast was perfect, and the costumes were gorgeous.

The story depicts what happened in Oz before the dotty Dorothy arrived. L. Frank Baum imagined the wonderful world of Oz and its strange beings as uncivilized, fairy-like, and just on the other side of normal. Author Gregory Maguire kept much of Baum’s world intact. (more…)

Mythbusters to Meet Star Trek

Mythbusters will take on classic Star Trek. In the original series episode Arena, Kirk is pitted against the Gorn captain. Kirk makes a cannon from items he finds on the planet. The Mythbusters’ task is to find out if it’s possible to make a working cannon from the items Captain Kirk employed.

The myth was a labor of love for Grant Imahara. He wanted to see it tested and he knew we wanted to see it tested. He asked his twitter followers to tweet with the tag #gorncannon so the show runners could get see a trend analysis. I tweeted the #gorncannon and lots of others did too. The response was enough to get the cannon added to the next viewers’ special. Grant and Tory have been keeping the fans updated on the progress with pictures of their Star Trek costumes and Think Geek accessories (a Tribble and communicators). Grant makes a great Spock.

The Mythbusters team has made cannons for previous myths. They’ve tested combustibility of various things. I think they’ll find a way to make the Gorn cannon work.

Harry Potter and the Slytherin Robes

I saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince this weekend. The director has been getting a lot of flack for cutting fan favorite scenes. I say, “fiddlesticks!” Given the density of the book, I think they did a great job of covering the key points. All Potter fans should see it. The ol’ Green and Silver features prominently in this installment. Yay. My main man Snape has a pivotal part to play. Yay, again. We get to see Harry drunk on luck and Ron drunk with love. All in all, a decent ride for a Potter a movie.

I’ve posted a few pictures of my Slytherin costume in honor of the latest movie. You won’t see any full length shots because my robes are child-sized. Adult Slytherin robes are hard to find. Go figure. Luckily, most Harry Potter costumes are easily procured. I have the little robes (I love the hood), the house tie, the house scarf, and Draco’s wand. I made my own wand from a dowel and a small finial glued together. I’ve found chopsticks and hair sticks make good wand bases.

You’ll also see me reading Bronte in the pictures. I figure the broody and tormented Bronte men are a good fit for my Snape crush.

Did you see the movie opening weekend?
