Take a Look, It’s in a Book

I’ve spent the weekend dwelling on last week’s announcement about Reading Rainbow’s cancellation. I decided how I will mourn this great loss of children’s television.

I know what I want to do.

I’m going to pick out one or two of my favorite books and present them Reading Rainbow style. I’ll sit down in front of a camera and show the book, give the title, author, illustrator, etc. Next up will be the synopsis. And to round it all out I’ll wear a costume related to the book.

Anyone else want in on this? I’d be willing to bet there are a lot of children, former children, parents, and teachers out there who’d love to help the internet fall in love with a book. Let’s try for September 28th: four weeks to make our videos.

But don’t take my word for it….

Dragon Con Approaches

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 by tcg

Dragon Con 2009 is in one week. That’s right, Labor Day weekend is almost upon us. I won’t be doing daily posts like last year, but you’ll find a recap or two here in the following weeks (maybe not by me). Here’s a commercial just in case you don’t know about Dragon Con.

My biggest gripe with this ad is the treatment of Anthony Daniels. He’s just C3P0? Anthony Daniels is by far the best emcee I have seen at the Masquerade. D*C TV, you should have been nicer to mister Daniels. He deserves a name check.

Easy being Green

Have any of you noticed we’re almost at two months til the big night? I’ll try to give one Halloween costume idea a week from here on out. This week is Kermit!

It’s hard not to love Kermit. If you’re short on time, pick up a baseball cap. You’ll have Kermie on your head so all you’ll need is a green shirt. Simple.

The bold ones should wear a Green Man Suit. The rest of us will wear a sweatsuit. Kermit is two simple steps away: attach the eyes to the hood and add a collar. The eyes are one ping pong ball cut in half or poms. You’re done.

Gloves and booties are optional.

I posted the video of the awesome Bumblebee Transformer costume but forgot to give you links to other Transformer costumes. I’ve had trouble locating adult versions of the Transformer costumes, but here’s an Optimus Prime you can try. It seems most licensed Transformer costumes are for children. I found old-school Bumblebee and movie Bumblebee. In addition, there are old-school Optimus Prime and movie Optimus Prime too. If you do a little searching, I bet you can be a robot in disguise too.

Crazy Soccer Kits

My favorite sport is soccer. It’s known for crazy fans, crazy players, and best of all, crazy uniforms. From tiger print jerseys to Dutch skirts, the kits run the range. There is one position on the pitch that has a little leeway in what they wear: keepers. They prefer to look like a bulls eye in the goal so as to attract the striker’s aim.

Back in the 90s I particularly loved the fluorescent and wild kits Jorge Campos wore for Mexico. These days Jeremie Janot out of France’s A.S. Saint-Étienne wears the kooky kits. His crazy uniforms are so distinctive, that like Jorge before him, he offered his signature line of kits for keepers. Check out his Spider-Man jersey from the 2005 season:

If you want a more modern costume on the pitch, you have to see the Getafe uniforms. From first glance they look like perfectly respectable kits. But lurking just under the surface is pure terror: the King. The Burger King, that is.

Perhaps this isn’t costume related, but would you classify some of this stuff as normal sport wear?
