Sexified Costumes Aren’t Necessary

I apologize in advance for this rant-like post. In general, I don’t mind a sexy costume now and then. I have several costumes that reveal tummies or are skin-tight. My issue is with costumes billed as “Sexy” versions of normal costumes. The latest additions to this trend are Sexy Wolverine, Sexy Cobra Commander, and Sexy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Why?

Wolverine has a female clone called X-23. She was part of the Weapon X program. She’s hot. Why dress like Wolverine in a dress when you can be a lean mean mutant machine in your own right? Cobra Commander is part of the GI Joe world. There are many beautiful and deadly females in GI Joe: Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Cover Girl, and the evil Baroness to name a few. While well-known females are less common in the TMNT universe, there are a couple you can recreate. There’s the spunky reporter April O’Neil who learned to fight alongside the Turtles. Then you have Shredder’s go-to Foot Clan leader Karai. She’s a mean lady. They’re already wearing spandex and deep V shirts…are short skirts needed?
I don’t mean to say women shouldn’t dress as Wolverine or Michelangelo, go for it. It’s possible to take a male character design and make it female, even sexy, without short skirts. Check out awesome Wolfpack Elite memberBuddhaful’s creations: Ash and Aquaman. She has a closet full of fantastic costumes like Ms. Marvel and Sue Storm.

Okay, rant over. Go back to ogling the pretty ladies.

Sorry, bit of a PS here–
But even X-23 aside, WHY dress up like Wolverine when you could be Rogue, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat!), Pixie or any NUMBER of the awesome Marvel ladies?!

Apparently my original comment got swallowed, so I’ll try and reconstruct it–though it won’t be the same, of course *sadface*
One of the most painful things about the whole sexy costume trend is the absolute LACK of creativity that goes into designing them. Need a sexy TMNT costume? Green mini dress, eyemask and padded backpack! Sexy Wolverine? Yellow and blue mini dress and claws! Sexy Optimus Prime? Blue and red mini dress with a robotic looking hairpiece! Hmmmm. I’m starting to see a pattern here.
There are ways to make male character costumes look feminine WITHOUT resorting to the totally unoriginal (and played out) mini skirt and low neckline combination. It’s a fun challange, and often times the results can be REALLY stunning without being just another way to show off a little leg and cleavage.
