Fascinating

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by tcg

f52One Saturday afternoon I made a fascinator. I used some scraps I had in the costume closet. You can follow along with this tutorial on Burda Style.

All you need is some lace, tulle, jewels, flowers, ribbon, whatever you have on hand. Cover some shaped poster board or fun foam with material to create a smooth surface. Loop and tie and arrange to your heart’s content. Once you’re satisfied with the configuration, glue or sew the pieces in place. Add a comb, clip, or headband to keep the fascinator on your head. I glued a few rhinestones onto my ribbons to catch the light.f32

Search TopsyTurvyDesign for some wonderful hats, clips, and fascinators.

Alice in Wonderland

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 by tcg

aiw_3 The Alice in Wonderland fever is spreading thanks to Tim Burton’s latest fantasy filled trip. There have been many attempts to bring Alice in Wonderland to viewers: plays, cartoons, movies, and TV miniseries. My favorite is the 1985 CBS special event. It starred Natalie Gregory as Alice and everyone else. It was packed to the brim with kooky costumes. (more…)

Carnival Around the World

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 by tcg

c_tt_12The carnival season featured creative costumes from around the world. Italy’s known for masks and elaborate costumes. France features local customs that light up the night. Brazil shimmies into the spotlight with the help of samba schools and feathers. New Orleans twists traditions into mega-floats and wild ideas. Portugal has water parades and bands. And finally Trinidad and Tobago. Their celebration has inspired the surrounding islands and an annual festival in England. (more…)

One of my aunts sent me some beautiful pictures of the masks of Venice. Enjoy the pretties.

Three masks for one costume. That's a secret identity.

Must Go to NZ

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 by tcg

ws_cpSo apparently in New Zealand it’s totally cool to wear costumes to sporting events. Who knew rugby was this much fun?

Every time the Wellington Sevens roll around, people go nuts in disguise. It’s awesome. Fans of all ages and all teams dress up as Simpson characters, Stop Lights, and even the kitchen sink. There are parades, costume contests, and fan revelry.

Costume shops hire extra staff to handle the cleaning on the hundreds of rental returns. They even expect there to be stadium stains like beer and dirt.

This phenomenon is a result of crazy sports fans and dorks having babies. I’m a dork. I’m a sports fan (sometimes). Maybe I’ll wear a costume to the next game I attend.
