Camp Fire USA has been around for 100 years yesterday. It was founded March 17, 1910. I’m proud to say I was in Cam Fire for 12 years. I learned about the environment, computers, community service, and how to sell candy. It’s a family tradition. Ask any of my aunts about their Council Fire memories or my uncles about having all those boxes of candy in the house…it was torment, heh.
The watch word is WoHeLo. It stands for Work, Health, and Love. For those that don’t know, Camp Fire is a youth organization for boys and girls of all races and creeds. There are no restrictions to membership. There are programs for children as young as 4 and young adults up to 21. All the youth give service to their community. They’ve aided Eleanor Roosevelt and Elvis Presley, just to name a two. While visiting D.C., my group met with Joycelyn Elders for a discourse about teens in America and AIDS. Camp Fire youth make a difference everyday whether it be during the Valentines for Vets campaign, Clean Sweep park programs, or other community projects.
Young children (formally the well known Bluebirds) earn badges and wear vests. By adolescence (Discovery), they begin to earn beads in lieu of badges. For every ten small beads you can earn one large bead. Each bead color and shape represents a different discipline. Everything from sports and outdoors to technology. They wear tunics/gowns with handmade moccasins. Each year you make another part of your ceremonial uniform: macrame collar and leather collar being the most common additions.
Horizon club is for teens. Members of Horizon and Teens in Action may work towards the WoHeLo, the highest award. Teens must complete four Reflection pathways before they can begin the three self-selected advocacy programs. One advocacy area is Camp Fire related, one is related to the community or world, and the third is either. Each one requires leading, teaching, serving, and speaking out. The final step is to learn about Camp Fire history. The WoHeLo takes anywhere from 2 to 4 years to complete.
Congratulations, Camp Fire on 100 years of helping our youth become strong and confident members of the community. On Saturday, July 31, 2010, councils across the nation will hold a special event in honor of 100 years.
WoHelo to you.
