Alice Part II

I finished painting my box.

Now I’ll hot glue the remnant fabric around the bottom of the box. Attach the white ruffle inside the box first. This will look like the bottom edge of her pinafore. Attach the blue (Disney versions) or yellow (original version) fabric just above the ruffle. Don’t glue the fake skirt all around the edge or it will look boxy. Leave it loose in spots. If you have any fabric left glue some in the upper window/arm holes to mimic the sleeves.

Use the discarded box flaps for the roof. Tape the flaps together in a roof shape. I kinda liked the gable look. Simply cover the roof in your preferred roofing material. The roof can be a hat or strapped on with a ribbon or head band. I created duct tape stabilizers inside the roof much like those found in a hard hat. Then I used barrettes to clip the strap to my hair.

Ta-da!

My neighbors did a few double-takes while we were outside taking pictures.

No-Sew Alice Costume

Monday, May 24th, 2010 by tcg

This year is a big Alice in Wonderland year. You or your little ones may want a costume that’s different form all the other little Alice’s. You won’t need a needle or thread for this one: Alice stuck in the White Rabbit’s house.

I’ve been waiting to make this costume for a few months. If you follow my Twitter feed, you’ve probably noticed I’ve been searching for a box. All I needed was a box. One box. Here’s a short material list and run down of the first steps.

Materials:
Box, at least torso size
Paint and/or contact paper
Hot glue
Duct tape
Remnant fabric in yellow or blue
Remnant 4-6 inch ruffle in white
Tights/knee highs in white
Black shoes/ankle boots
Moss, straw, or model house roofing tiles
Box knife or scissors

Ideally, the box should hit mid-thigh. The box I found is knee-length but it will do. The box will become the White Rabbit’s house. Remove the lid flaps. Cut out windows on the second floor for your arms. Paint it and decorate as you see fit. You can use contact paper or paint. I hot glued on some painted poster board shutters. I used white duct tape as trim for the windows and door because I didn’t want to mess with painting that kind of detail.

Let dry for a day or two and make touch ups if needed. I’ll add the fake dress in a couple of days…see you then.

Last Monday I started the Almost no-Sew Daisy Costume with the leaf shaped sleeve. Today I give you part II: the Petal Collar. Gather your supplies and let’s get to work. Do not make my mistake and misjudge your hot glue stick supply or you will be sewing on our almost no-sew project. Ready? Part II

I need a hero!

I am planning out my costume for the hospital visit with the Wolf Pack Elite next week. My Wonder Girl tank top is a little tight, heh. One of my gauntlets is broken. Do I repair and remake or start anew? I think I’m going to start with a new costume. I’ve racked my brain for heroines that would not be too complicated for a two week build. I’ve chosen Stephanie’s Robin. She put away the Spoiler mantle for a while to be Robin while Tim was on hiatus. She almost died…but she’s better now and back as Spoiler. What do you think?

Daisy

This month’s costume is a Daisy. Today I’ll give you the supply list and Part I of the assembly how-to. Next Monday, March 23, I’ll post Part II. On that Wednesday I will don the Daisy costume. There’s only one small bit of hand stitching in the entire project. Let’s get started on our Almost No-Sew Daisy Costume. Part I

Down to the Wire

Monday, August 25th, 2008 by tcg

Well folks, Thursday marks the beginning of the 2008 Dragon Con adventure.

My plan for this year was to bring Kitty Pryde (your voting selection), updated Wonder Girl, Wonder Girl armor, and my Ariel EMT costume. What actually will happen is still up in the air because the armor is unfinished. I ran into more yield signs than I expected. Pattern making is not my strong point and the costume has suffered for it. I still have hope though. I’ll keep that list of four costumes and add the Dr. Horrible groupie to the end.

I was also working on costumes for ManWithPez. His list included Yorick Brown, Ariel EMT, Spider-Sense Spider-Man, and the ever lovable Seymour Krelborn. Again with the hitches. Yorick is finished and ready to go. The EMT and Seymour were previously completed. The Spider-sense mask has befuddled me. I’m not a seamstress so a spandex mask that covers only half a face is tricky for me to figure out. Again, I have not lost hope. We have added Dr. Horrible to his costume trunk for D*C.

Last you read the Dr. Horrible costume was giving me fits. Mostly due to poor shipping procedures and bad online shops. No more worry my friends. The box of goggles arrived just a few minutes ago. They are pine green. We’ll paint and distress them before Thursday. The lab coat was also troublesome. I picked up the Mad Scientists costume and made some alterations (still in process). All the black buttons have been removed and white buttons procured, more than a foot of length has been cut, slits have been added to the sides, and double vents have been created on the back. The only thing I don’t care for is the chalk white starkness of the polyester coat. No time to test dyes this time around.

I made a Kitty glove! All on my own. It looks a little wonky because I sewed it by hand. I like it. Now that I know I can do it I’ll sew the other glove. Too bad I couldn’t track down a purple dragon. Sigh.

All in all I’m pretty pleased with taking four costumes each. Keep your fingers crossed that I can manage the armor in three days. Heh. When I get a break from the needle and thread I’ll grab the camera and add some pics for you.

I’ll keep you posted.
