Green Hornet and Vigilante Heritage

The official trailer for the new Green Hornet flick is out. It seems a little off somehow. I know what’s missing. The Green Hornet, aka Brit Reid, is the Great Nephew of The Lone Ranger. That’s right. The important vigilante, good-doer heritage is missing. Well, at least from the trailer. Maybe it’s in the film, I don’t know.

It’s like it can’t decide if it’s a comedy starring Seth Rogen or a film by Michel Gondry. I don’t think the studio could decide either. All I know is Kato has some mighty big shoes to fill. (more…)

The Stillsuits of Dune

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 by tcg

The 1984 David Lynch film Dune gets a lot of play around here. While the plot may be overblown and some of the major parts of the book are kind of glossed over, you can’t argue that serious money wasn’t pumped into the costume budget. While almost every costume in the movie is a feast for the eyes, of particular importance are the stillsuits worn by the desert-centric Fremen. The suits in both the movie and the books are designed to recycle all the water produced by the human body, giving a normal person the ability to survive in the harsh, waterless environment of the planet Arrakis.

Barbaric Costumes

Conan the Barbarian is back. Jason Momoa, of Stargate Atlantis and Baywatch fame, wears the loincloth this time around. Well, it’s not so much a tiny loincloth as an appropriate battle skirt. It’s not a skirt, but I don’t know what to call it. I like the arm armor. Nice touch.

Shall we compare Conans?

Teachers, they give us the tools to become the people we want to be. Often times they can feel like it’s them against the world. As the school year runs to a close, we honor the hard work and thankless hours of our teachers. Take some time to say, “Thanks, Teach!” on Teacher’s Day, May 4th. Let’s take a look at some of my most memorable fictional teachers. (more…)

Most Excellent

The black comedy Paper Man stars Jeff Daniels, Emma Stone, Lisa Kudrow, and Ryan Reynolds as Captain Excellent. The Captain is a left over imaginary friend who visits whenever Jeff’s character struggles in life.

Captain Excellent looks as if he walked out of a 1950’s comic book. Like all the classics, his costume is red, blue, and yellow (printing necessity). He has meticulously quaffed hair and big red boots. If you need inspiration for a superhero costume, look no further than the classics. (more…)

Mildred Pierce Again

Kate Winslet is starring in the remake of Mildred Pierce. It’s going to be a TV movie, probably cable, but other than that I’m light on the details.

Mildred Pierce is a dark novel set in the 30’s with complex and racy plot points. When it made it to the big screen in 1945 starring Joan Crawford in an Oscar winning performance, some of the sex was cut, a murder was added, and the time frame was condensed to a few years in the 40s.

I have no idea which story is being remade or if it’s a completely new rewrite of Mildred’s plight. I suspect this new adaptations will more closely follow the book. After all, the Hays Code doesn’t hold much sway anymore.

I do know the costumes for both look gorgeous.
