Costumed Heroes
Monday, May 5th, 2008 by tcgA few weeks ago I suggested you dress up and read at the local library. The summer reading programs are great time to try it. It can be a lot of fun. Kids really enjoy story time. Meeting a favorite character at library just makes it better.
Some costumed heroes go further. They become real heroes by visiting hospitals and bringing some cheer to sick kids. We’ve all heard of clowns, but why stop there? Wouldn’t Spider-Man make your day? The folks with the Hero Alliance do just that by spending time at hospitals. They do all sorts of things including handing out free comic books to promote reading. Check your area for groups like this one or start one yourself.
It doesn’t just have to be libraries and hospitals. If you’ve lovingly put together a costume, or rented a costume, why not think of the community possibilities? You can contact schools and PTAs about book reports or biographies.
You all remember the day Mr Lincoln came to your class, right? Wouldn’t it have been cool if fictional characters or their authors came too? Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler can talk about art and the local museum. Laura Ingalls Wilder could describe life on the prairie and answer questions from the students. Mark Twain can tell short stories about frogs.
Help firefighters during their fundraising week. Assist police with their school safety presentations. Work with doctors, dentists, and nurses to promote healthy living. Hand out water at races and fundraiser walks. Paint faces at community bizarres.
Your costume can be more than just a play thing for holidays and conventions. Get out there and be a hero!
