Would You Like a Doll?

Friday, May 15th, 2009 by tcg

I’m straying from the costume content for a moment (it’s sort of pop culture related) to encourage my readers to help Lisa Spodak raise money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. She began in 2002 by getting pledges and donations. Her determination has led to a well known and popular fudnraiser of auctioning celebrity autographed Avon Breast Cancer Teddy Bears and pink Everlast Breast Cancer Boxing Gloves. Her current auction features the leads of Fox’s Dollhouse Eliza Dushku and Tahmoh Penikett and guest stars Alan Tudyk and Mark Sheppard. The auctions run through May 21, 2009.

Robin’s Day Out

I met up with a few of the Wolf Pack Elite this afternoon. Superman, Batgirl, Spider-Man, and Captain America met me at the Children’s Museum for a special event for Children’s Hospital. The kids were fantastic. They had a lot of energy bubbling out of them. The children received special photos of themselves in the place of famous faces. We were on hand to play with the kids and take pictures with them if wanted. I got a work out in Elwood City with Arthur and DW’s friends. Some of the children and I ran along with Arthur during his theme song. Batgirl is wonderful with children. They loved her. Brief recap here.

I need a hero!

I am planning out my costume for the hospital visit with the Wolf Pack Elite next week. My Wonder Girl tank top is a little tight, heh. One of my gauntlets is broken. Do I repair and remake or start anew? I think I’m going to start with a new costume. I’ve racked my brain for heroines that would not be too complicated for a two week build. I’ve chosen Stephanie’s Robin. She put away the Spoiler mantle for a while to be Robin while Tim was on hiatus. She almost died…but she’s better now and back as Spoiler. What do you think?

Costumed Heroes

A few weeks ago I suggested you dress up and read at the local library. The summer reading programs are great time to try it. It can be a lot of fun. Kids really enjoy story time. Meeting a favorite character at library just makes it better.

Some costumed heroes go further. They become real heroes by visiting hospitals and bringing some cheer to sick kids. We’ve all heard of clowns, but why stop there? Wouldn’t Spider-Man make your day? The folks with the Hero Alliance do just that by spending time at hospitals. They do all sorts of things including handing out free comic books to promote reading. Check your area for groups like this one or start one yourself.

It doesn’t just have to be libraries and hospitals. If you’ve lovingly put together a costume, or rented a costume, why not think of the community possibilities? You can contact schools and PTAs about book reports or biographies.

You all remember the day Mr Lincoln came to your class, right? Wouldn’t it have been cool if fictional characters or their authors came too? Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler can talk about art and the local museum. Laura Ingalls Wilder could describe life on the prairie and answer questions from the students. Mark Twain can tell short stories about frogs.

Help firefighters during their fundraising week. Assist police with their school safety presentations. Work with doctors, dentists, and nurses to promote healthy living. Hand out water at races and fundraiser walks. Paint faces at community bizarres.

Your costume can be more than just a play thing for holidays and conventions. Get out there and be a hero!
