Glove me

Kitty’s coming along nicely. My boots and collar are trimmed with yellow. My belt fits and is only in need of a completed X buckle. Each time I cut out the buckle I find it’s not quite right. Sigh. I’ll just have to pick the least messy one. The pattern is ready for the yellow body accent. This is it. My hands? Why yes, they are supposed to be covered.

Gloves, gloves, gloves. Why must you vex me so?

Kitty needs gloves. Much to my chagrin, my little sewing machine does not have a zigzag stitch. Nope. Just for laughs, I tried sewing the belt, but the evil machine hated the material. The yellow knit and sewing machine are like oil and water. So what do I do?

Do I try to track down a local seamstress that can whip up some gloves for me? Do I buy some cheap marching gloves and try to dye to match? What do you think?

I Love a Sale

Thursday, July 17th, 2008 by tcg

You might be wondering what I’ve been doing with myself this week. I’ll tell you.

I have been reaping the benefits of driving past Hancock Fabric and seeing a fabric sale. I was able to pick up vinyl for $6 a yard. I was pretty happy with that price. Is there a better price? Probably, but this one makes me smile. I am now in possession of black and white material for Wonder Girl’s battle skirt. I’ve even begun to cut some of the white pieces. Today or tomorrow I will place the punches and eyelets then lace the strips together. I’m excited.

I finally got around to making the eagle W pattern for Wonder Girl’s armor. After looking at her a few more times (read over and over), I decided to add the yellow foam around the red foam. The emblem is outlined in gold so this should make it easier to paint. Don’t you think it makes a nice guide? But let’s not get ahead of things. First I need to shape it to my chest and seal it.

There’s more Kitty progress too. At the same fabric sale I found some yellow knit on sale. There’s some stretch to it. I have an idea for making her body piece that should be okay with knit. I’ve been fretting about the gloves. They need to be the same color as her costume but I’ve never made gloves. A very helpful member of Cosplay.com told me about We Love Colors. Wow. They have gloves, tights, leotards and so much more in every color you can imagine. I’m keeping that on standby just in case my glove attempt fails miserably.

So that’s where I’m at today. I’ll post tomorrow to show what happened to my skirt.

Cross your fingers!

Kitty!

I haven’t forgotten my other costume, oh no. The one you voted for me to create for Dragon Con. I have progress on Kitty Pryde. Yay!

The UPS man dropped off my body suit today. It’s matte black and super soft. I love it. When I tired it on I went ahead and put on my boots to see how it looks. I don’t have any other parts to the costume made yet, but I think you get the idea. I grabbed Ampersand to stand in for Lockheed in a picture for you.

The next step will be making the yellow accent, belt, and gloves. I’m thinking yellow vinyl. Any suggestions?

The Winner is…

Kit&lockheed

The polls are closed…for this round.

With 46%, Kitty Pryde won the most votes. More than 50 of you participated, thank you. Jem was closing in on her over the weekend, but Kitty’s support never wavered. Sadly, Lisa Hayes and Carrie Kelly weren’t as loved. It’s likely that at some time or another I will make all of these costumes. Don’t be sad if your choice didn’t win.

I will make Kitty’s Astonishing X Men uniform. The picture above isn’t quite right. The boots will be black not yellow. There is a high black collar instead of no collar. The shoulders aren’t as pronounced. Finally, the belt is yellow not red. See below. I’ve made an album of Kitty and Lockheed pictures in my gallery for reference.

Kitty will join the other costumes slated for D*C. Watch the blog for updates on construction and progress photographs. This will be my first time sewing stretchy material and I’m nervous as all get out. My sewing machine is one of those cheapo models for hemming and curtains. I don’t know how it will handle the more delicate fabric. Yes, it does have a zigzag stitch. I’ll look at patterns and already made suits to get started. Now, if only I can master this phasing thing…Wish me luck!

Help me pick a costume

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by tcg

I’m having trouble deciding on my final costume for Dragon Con. I’ve narrowed it down to four possibilities. Select one and decide my fate. :-D

What should I do?
